PHC4 Research Brief Logo

This research brief examines newborn birth admissions involving drug withdrawal, or neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). Newborns suffering from drug withdrawal are much more likely to have complications and tend to stay in the hospital longer.

Statewide, the rate of NAS in newborns increased more than 1,000% between FYs 2000-2001 and FYs 2016-2017.
