This research brief examines hospital admissions for select conditions that might have been avoided with effective primary or preventive care—thereby avoiding the need for a more expensive hospital stay.

Approximately 1 in 8 hospitalizations (12.7%) were potentially preventable in FY 2017. The estimated cost of these admissions was $1.2 billion.
