PHC4 Releases New Financial Numbers for Ambulatory Surgery Centers

Harrisburg, PA - November 20, 2014 - The number of ambulatory surgery centers in Pennsylvania increased by four in 2013 and the average revenue per visit to an ASC rose 4.8 percent to $1,084, according to a new analysis from the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council (PHC4).

Other findings of the agency's 2013 Financial Analysis: Volume Two: Ambulatory Surgery Centers report include::

The average operating and total margins for ASCs statewide decreased from Fiscal Year (FY) 2012 to FY 2013, with the average operating margin decreasing to 24.94% (from 25.74%) and the total margin decreasing to 25.13% (from 26.92%), continuing a trend of marginal annual changes that began in Fiscal Year 2008.
ASCs reported 1.06 million outpatient visits and $1.10 billion in net outpatient revenue during FY 2013, compared to 1.07 billion outpatient visits and $1.15 billion in net outpatient revenue in FY 2012.
The number of procedures performed at ASCs increased 0.5% in FY 2013.
Medicare and Medical Assistance covered 41.9% of outpatient procedures at ASCs during FY 2013, down from 43.9% in FY 2012.

"In FY 2013, ASCs continued a six-year trend of marginal changes in financial margins and the number of ASCs also continued to grow," said Joe Martin, executive director of PHC4.

PHC4's report on ASCs is the second in its Financial Analysis series. Volume One, released in May, reported on the financial health of General Acute Care hospitals.

An ASC is a facility licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Health that provides specialty or multi-specialty surgical care to patients who do not require overnight hospitalization, but require medical supervision following a procedure. Operating margin is the ratio of operating income to total operating revenue. Total margin is the ratio of total income to total revenue.
